Tour de Fleece 2024 - Welcome!

Welcome, spinners (and knitters and crocheters)!

This is the welcome/introduction post for the 2024 Tour de Fleece.

Tour de Fleece is an annual challenge in which participants spin (or knit or crochet!) along with the riders of the Tour de France.

This year's Tour de France departs from Florence, Italy on June 29 and ends in Nice, France on July 21. (Due to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, this is the first year ever that the Tour ends outside Paris!)

The Tour is divided into stages, of which eight are flat, four are hilly, and seven are mountain. You might want to set different goals for yourself based on the type of stage for each day. On their rest days, we rest too!

Each participants goals might be different. Some examples are:

  • spin for 15 minutes for each day that the riders are riding;
  • spin an equivalent number of grams of fiber to the number of miles the riders are riding that day;
  • challenge yourself to a new spinning technique on "mountain" days;
  • work on your plying on "speed trial" days

During the Tour, there will be a daily post on this blog. Come to the comments of that day's post to check in. Don't worry if you miss a day (or two, or five) - just show us what you've done when you can! If you'd like to post pictures of your progress, it's fine to link to your social media or somewhere else you might be able to host them.

Now, please introduce yourself in the comments and tell us a little about your goals for this year's Tour!

Work on consistency with spinning and ultimate goal to spin enough fiber to knit a sweater. This will be a work in progress probably taking several months to complete but this is a good starting point.

I retired two months ago and I have a lot of fiber I’ve accumulated over the years for just this moment. I’m considering this run on Tour de Fleece for the community as well as the commitment to refind a spinning habit.

Hello. Just taught myself to drop spin. I’m really enjoying it. Let’s have fun.
